Which massage should you book?

Book Swedish to relax and deep tissue for knots or firm pressure. For anything else, find your reason in the table below. On safety, the NIH's National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says the risk of harmful effects from massage therapy appears to be low, though it notes rare serious side effects, some after vigorous massage such as deep tissue, so mention any health condition when you book.

What you want Book Time Price
Relaxation Swedish Massage 60 min $80
Knots in one area, such as a shoulder Deep Tissue Massage 30 min $65
Firm work over the whole body Deep Tissue Massage 60 min $90
Full-body lymphatic drainage Lymphatic Drainage Massage 60 min $120
A massage and a facial in one visit 90-Min Combo: Massage + Lymphatic Facial 90 min $188
Comfort during pregnancy Prenatal Massage 60 min $100
Two therapists at once Four Hands Swedish Massage 60 min $150
Scent and relaxation Aromatherapy Massage 60 min $100
A short reset for a tense head Scalp Massage 30 min $65

How long should you book?

Match the length to how much of the body needs work:

  1. 30 minutes of deep tissue for one problem area, such as a shoulder or the lower back.
  2. 60 minutes for the whole body, so the area that needs the most attention is not rushed.
  3. 90 minutes to cover the whole body and go back over the tight spots.
  4. 120 minutes, the longest session on the menu, for extra time on every area.

If lower back pain is why you are booking, read our guide to what massage can and cannot do for back pain first.

What is the difference between Swedish and deep tissue?

Deep tissue is slower and firmer, and it is priced higher at every length the two share: 60 minutes of deep tissue is $90, against $80 for Swedish. Swedish uses long, flowing strokes at light to medium pressure and suits relaxation. Deep tissue works slowly into the deeper layers of muscle, where tension tends to collect in the neck, shoulders, lower back and hips. Whichever you book, tell your therapist how much pressure you want, and say so again if it needs to change.

What is a four hands massage?

One guest and two therapists, working both sides of the body at the same time in matching strokes. It follows Swedish technique, so expect light to medium pressure. The 60 minute session is $150, and the price covers both therapists.

Which lymphatic treatment should you book?

It depends on whether you want lymphatic work on its own or with a massage first. There are two ways to book it here:

Lymphatic drainage works the whole body with light, slow strokes. The combo starts with an hour of Swedish or deep tissue and finishes with a 30 minute lymphatic facial.

What is an aromatherapy massage?

A relaxation massage with essential oils blended into the massage oil, usually at gentle to medium pressure. Mayo Clinic's guide to relaxation techniques lists both massage and aromatherapy among them. If you are pregnant, the Prenatal Massage is the one adapted for pregnancy.

What is a scalp massage?

Fingertip massage of the scalp and temples. The 30 minute session fits into a lunch break, and you can book up to 120 minutes when you want longer.

Booking and pricing questions, answered

How do I book a massage at W Spa?

Book online through Fresha, which shows live availability, or call (650) 272-6881. We are at 441 Waverley Street, half a block off University Avenue in downtown Palo Alto, open every day from 9:30 AM to 10 PM.

Does deep tissue massage cost more than Swedish?

Yes. A 60 minute deep tissue massage is $90 and a 60 minute Swedish massage is $80, and deep tissue is priced higher at every length the two share. Deep tissue also comes as a 30 minute session for one problem area, at $65.

How early should I arrive, and what if I am running late?

Arriving a few minutes early gives you time to check in and tell your therapist where to focus. If you are running late, call (650) 272-6881 as soon as you know.

Do you sell gift cards?

Yes. W Spa gift cards are sold online through yourgift.cards, and our gift cards page links straight to them.

What should I wear for a massage?

Undress to the level you are comfortable with. During a massage you are normally covered by a sheet, with only the area being worked on uncovered. If you would rather keep more on, tell your therapist before you start.

Can I add hot stone, cupping or a body scrub?

Yes, as an extra on a massage you have booked. Each add-on takes 10 minutes: hot stone $20, cupping $20, body scrub $30. Choose it when you book, or call (650) 272-6881 to ask about adding one to an existing booking.

Does W Spa offer memberships?

Yes. Membership details are not published online, so ask on your next visit or call (650) 272-6881.
