Can you take the free Marguerite shuttle from campus?
Yes, on weekdays. Stanford Transportation says all Marguerite routes are free and open to the public, and Line P runs between the Oval and the Palo Alto Transit Center beside the Caltrain station. From the Transit Center, W Spa is roughly a 10 to 12 minute walk up University Avenue.
Stanford describes the main lines as running Monday through Friday, except university holidays, with only the Shopping Express also running Friday to Sunday. Weekday service starts early and winds down in the evening, and timetables change, so check the current one before counting on a shuttle home from a late appointment.
- Board Line P at the Oval, at the top of Palm Drive.
- Ride to the Palo Alto Transit Center, the bus and shuttle plaza at the Caltrain station.
- Walk up University Avenue into downtown, away from campus.
- Turn onto Waverley Street toward Lytton Avenue; W Spa is at number 441, half a block along.
How far is W Spa from Stanford Hospital and the Caltrain station?
About 2 miles from Stanford Hospital at 500 Pasteur Drive, roughly 7 to 12 minutes by car off-peak or about 30 to 40 minutes walking. If you drive, there is free street parking right outside the spa.
Palo Alto Caltrain station, at 95 University Avenue, is about half a mile from W Spa, roughly a 10 minute walk up University Avenue.
By shuttle from the medical center
On weekdays, Marguerite Lines X and Y and the Medical Center line run between Stanford Medical Center and the Palo Alto Transit Center at the Caltrain station. From there it is the same walk along University Avenue to W Spa.
What is the cheapest massage near Stanford?
$60 at W Spa, for 30 minutes of Swedish massage. No separate student rate is published on W Spa's Fresha menu.
- Swedish massage, 30 minutes, $60: the back, neck and shoulders at light to medium pressure.
- Deep tissue, 30 minutes, $65: slow, firm pressure on one area, such as the neck and shoulders after long hours at a desk.
- Scalp massage, 30 minutes, $65: slow fingertip pressure and circles across the scalp and temples.
- Swedish massage, 45 minutes, $70: the full body at light to medium pressure.
- Swedish massage, 60 minutes, $80: the lowest-priced full hour on the menu.
- Deep tissue, 60 minutes, $90: firm work on the whole body, or a longer stay on the areas that hurt.
Is a 30 minute massage long enough?
For one area, usually yes. Thirty minutes of deep tissue gives the therapist time to warm up and work into a single region, such as the neck and shoulders or the lower back. Full-body work needs one of the longer bookings.
For an ache that keeps coming back, one trial points toward longer, more frequent sessions. NCCIH describes a 2014 trial of 228 people with chronic neck pain in which 60 minute massages two or three times a week worked better than fewer or shorter sessions. For a one-off reset in a hard week, 30 minutes on the spot that hurts is a reasonable booking.
Fitting it between classes
By bike, a 30 minute session takes a little over an hour away from the Main Quad: 10 to 15 minutes each way, half an hour on the table, and a few minutes at either end to lock up and settle in. Walking from the Quad takes about half an hour each way, which makes a 60 minute session a better use of the trip than a 30.
Can a massage help with exam stress?
It may, in the short term. A 2004 meta-analysis of 37 randomized studies in Psychological Bulletin found that a single massage reduced state anxiety, meaning how anxious you feel in the moment, along with blood pressure and heart rate.
The same analysis found no drop in cortisol after a single session. Its largest effects, on longer-running (trait) anxiety and on depression, came from a course of treatment rather than one visit. An hour on the table in exam week is a reasonable way to wind down, but anxiety that has been disrupting sleep or study for weeks is a matter for a clinician, and massage does not replace that care.
How do you book a massage at W Spa?
Online through Fresha, which shows the open times for every service, or by calling the desk at (650) 272-6881. The spa is open every day from 9:30 AM to 10 PM, weekends included.
At the start of the session, say how firm you want the pressure and which area matters most, and mention anything medical, such as a recent injury, a blood-clotting problem or a pregnancy. If a sore spot is new, sharp or getting worse, have a doctor look at it before booking a massage for it.
