Four hands massage in Palo Alto: two therapists, one guest
How it feels, what it costs next to a one-therapist Swedish massage, and which length to book at W Spa.
The short answer
A four hands massage at W Spa in downtown Palo Alto is a Swedish massage given by two therapists at once, on one guest. It costs $130 for 45 minutes, $150 for 60 minutes and $240 for 90 minutes, and each price covers one guest. That is about twice the Swedish price for the same length.

What is a four hands massage?
A Swedish massage given by two therapists at the same time, on one guest. W Spa offers four hands massage in Palo Alto as the Four Hands Swedish Massage on its Fresha menu, at 45, 60 or 90 minutes. The two therapists usually work on opposite sides of the table in matching strokes, so both shoulders, both arms or both legs are worked at once.
The strokes are the ones you would get in a Swedish session: long, flowing movements, kneading and gentle circles. What changes is the amount of contact at any moment, with four hands on you instead of two.
Is it for one guest or two?
One guest. People sometimes mix it up with two guests being massaged side by side, which is a different service and is not on the W Spa menu. If two of you each want a massage, each person books a session of their own.
What does a four hands massage feel like?
More enveloping than a standard massage. With strokes landing on both sides of the body at once, there is more contact than your attention can follow, so it can be harder to keep a running commentary going in your head.
The pressure is Swedish pressure, light to medium by default. Both therapists can go firmer if you ask. If you want slow, deep work on one knot, deep tissue is the better booking.
Some people find it too much: two people close by, and more touch at once than they like. For them, a single-therapist Swedish session gives the same strokes.
Does it feel twice as strong?
No. Each therapist works at Swedish pressure, so the force on any one spot is about what a single therapist would use. The difference is that two areas are worked at the same moment instead of one.
Who is a four hands massage good for?
It suits people who find it hard to switch off during a normal massage, people marking an occasion, and anyone receiving it as a gift.
- People whose minds keep running during a massage.
- Anyone marking something: a birthday, a promotion, the end of a long project or a hard stretch at work.
- Someone who already gets regular massages and would like to try something different.
- A gift. W Spa sells gift cards through yourgift.cards, so the person receiving it can choose their own time.
How much does a four hands massage cost in Palo Alto?
About twice the Swedish price at the same length, because you are paying for the time of two therapists instead of one: $10 under double at 45 and 60 minutes, and exactly double at 90.
There is no 75 or 120 minute four hands option.
| Length | Four hands (two therapists) | Swedish (one therapist) |
|---|---|---|
| 45 min | $130 | $70 |
| 60 min | $150 | $80 |
| 90 min | $240 | $120 |
Which length of four hands massage should I book?
Sixty minutes, for most first bookings. It is the cheapest of the three lengths per minute, and long enough to get used to two therapists before the session is half over. The first few minutes of any massage go on settling in, and in a 45 minute session that is a bigger share of the time.
Book 45 minutes when the price matters more than the length, or when it is a gift for someone who may not want a full hour. Book 90 minutes when you want the whole body done slowly, with time for the therapists to come back to the places you liked.
What happens during a four hands appointment?
It runs much like any Swedish massage, with a second therapist at the table. In general, expect these steps:
- Arrive a few minutes early so the session can start on time, since two therapists are booked for the same slot.
- Before you lie down, say how firm you want the pressure, which areas to focus on or skip, and any injuries, health conditions or pregnancy.
- Undress to the level you are comfortable with and get under the sheet. Only the areas being worked on are uncovered.
- Talk if you want to, or not at all. If the pressure on one side feels different from the other, say so and they can match it.
- When it ends, take your time getting up before you head back out.
Is there research on four hands massage?
Very little. We have not found a controlled trial comparing four hands with a standard one-therapist massage of the same length, so there is no evidence that it does more for pain, stress or sleep.
What does exist is research on massage in general. A 2004 meta-analysis in Psychological Bulletin pooled 37 randomized studies and found that a single session lowered state anxiety, heart rate and blood pressure; the guide to massage, stress and anxiety goes through it. On safety, NCCIH reports that the risk of harmful effects from massage appears to be low.
Mayo Clinic notes that, beyond specific conditions, some people enjoy massage because it often produces feelings of caring, comfort and connection.

Questions people ask
Is a four hands massage for one person or two?
One. Two therapists work on a single guest at the same time, and the menu price covers that one guest. If two people each want a massage, each books their own session.
How much is a four hands massage at W Spa?
$130 for 45 minutes, $150 for 60 minutes and $240 for 90 minutes, per guest, as listed on Fresha. A Swedish massage with one therapist is $70, $80 and $120 at the same lengths.
Can I ask for firm pressure in a four hands massage?
Yes, you can ask both therapists for firmer pressure. It is a Swedish massage, though, so the style stays long, flowing strokes rather than slow, sustained work on one area. For that, book deep tissue, from $65 for 30 minutes.
Is a four hands massage a good gift?
It makes a memorable one, especially for someone who already has regular massages. W Spa sells gift cards through yourgift.cards, and the person receiving it books a time that suits them.
Is four hands a good choice for a first-ever massage?
It can be, but a Swedish massage with one therapist is an easier start and lets you find out what pressure you like. Once you know that, four hands is easier to enjoy, because you can tell both therapists exactly what you want from the first minute.
Do I need to book a four hands massage in advance?
It helps, because two therapists have to be free at the same time. Book ahead on Fresha, or call (650) 272-6881 to ask about a specific time.
Can I have a four hands massage while pregnant?
Book Prenatal Massage instead. It is the service on the W Spa menu adapted for pregnancy, usually worked side-lying with pillows, from $100 for 60 minutes. Say how far along you are when you book, and check with your doctor or midwife if you have any concerns.
